Dear Readers,

In the late 1960s when I was a student at the University of Munich in Germany, it was impossible to visit Estonia. It was a protected zone of the Soviet Union, and unless you had relatives in Estonia, you could not obtain a visa. From the photos I’ve seen of those times, Tallinn was gray and dirty. The Soviet Union denied there was any crime, but pickpockets and thieves were common on the streets. People were so poor, they would do anything to buy groceries, if there were any groceries to buy. When the Soviet union collapsed in 1991, Estonia, like the other Baltic nations, declared independence from the USSR. It took a long time to reestablish their businesses and economy, but Tallinn is now a major success story. Clean, safe, affordable, and…
